FAQ: All you need to know about firmware upgrades

Post by FTP »

All you need to know about firmware upgrades

Where can I find the current firmware of my devices?
  1. Open your NetAtmo webapp, smartphone or tablet app
  2. Click on the "Settings" icon of the webapp (the grey gear wheel on the right),
or tap on the menu icon, then "Settings" menu if you are on your smartphone or tablet app
  3. The firmware are visible under:
    - the "Outdoor module" section > Firmware: 00
    - the "Indoor module" section > Firmware: 00
    - etc.
Where can I find the last firmware?
In April 2015, NetAtmo started to provide information about major firmware here.
However...
1/ older firmware release notes are not in this post (for some few firmware we can find information in various other posts on the forum - cf. below)
2/ some minor firmware are also still not documented

Can I get notified when new firmware are available?
So far, no. NetAtmo has never setup such notification, neither on your webapp, smartphone or tablet, nor by registering for email notification in your account.

Does an automatic firmware upgrade feature exist?
Yes. Firmware 132 has been the first one automatically pushed by NetAtmo.
The release of this feature has not been documented anywhere but while no one ever mentioned any automatic update during the 4 years before firmware 132, many forum users started to mention an automatic update for firmware 132 starting April 19th 2017.
However, as it's the very first time it happens, we don't know yet if NetAtmo will in the future push all new firmware or only the few they consider "major".

How can I run a manual upgrade?
Procedure by connecting your NetAtmo weather station to a computer using the USB cable:
  1. Download the "Setup Wizard" for your Netatmo Weather Station
    http://my.netatmo.com/settings/download
  2. Connect your NetAtmo weather station to your computer using the USB cable of the power supply
  3. Its driver is automatically installing
  4. Once ready, run the "Netatmo Wizard" software and follow the 3 steps (the firmware upgrade will start automatically)
  5. And answer "No" when you will be asked if you want to replace your existing network settings
However be careful: this upgrade is followed by a re-installation, so some settings may be lost!
At least it's the case of the localization that is always lost during this process and is aligned on the IP address localization (which is of course wrong in many cases).

Procedure through bluetooth or wifi(?) and a computer, phone or tablet(?) with no need to a USB cable:
  1. ???
This process upgrades the weather station firmware only, but transfers to the station the firmwares of the other radio modules (outdoor, additional indoor, rain gauge, anemometer). And if needed, it's the weather station that automatically upgrade the other module(s) (this process can take up to 6 hours).
viewtopic.php?p=18335#p18335

What is the upgrade process?
The main module is the upgraded first. Its firmware includes the firmwares of all the other types of radio modules (outdoor, additional indoor, rain gauge, wind gauge). Once updated successfully, the main module will send to your other modules their new firmwares via radio and install them. This whole process can take up to 6 hours.

Is there any risk, especially for my data or settings, doing a firmware upgrade?
If your weather station was connected to Internet (so it had time to sync the last data it has recorded) and providing the new firmware is free of bugs, there's normally no risk for your data as they are saved on NetAtmo servers and not on your device.
However be careful: this upgrade is followed by a re-installation, so some settings may be lost (reset)!
I personally experienced that the localization was lost during this process and was aligned on the IP address localization (which was of course wrong).
Also as any new software, a new firmware can have bugs. Some users already experienced some.

Is there any release notes or change log about new firmware?
Nothing exhaustive. But some information have been given in the "Frequently asked questions" forum for some firmware, not all.

Here is what we've been able to collect...

Hi,

Since yesterday I'm looking for detailed information regarding firmware upgrades but it looks like there's nothing on the NetAtmo website (not even an help section), nothing on the help pages of the webapp, smartphone and tablet apps and no FAQ on the forums!
BTW, this forum is called "Frequently asked questions" but there's not a single FAQ in it.

So I've decided to build mine that hopefully could be useful to everyone :-)
The first draft is above, but I'm missing some information (cf. text in red).

Anyone can help completing so I can update the 1st post?
Any mistake in what I wrote above?

Thanks! :)

As already mentioned in other thread, version 95 is out, bringing version 41 on indoor/outdoor modules.

No, you do not need to use the start page, at least not with the Mac version of the software: you plug in the station, it does the update immediately. Tested it yesterday.

Any link, source, additional information?

Just tried to connect the station with the USB cable to the PC I used to install the station (on Windows XP) but no update automatically starts.
I need to run the wizard software for that.

Also I was still in 86 / 37!!! Proof that the Netatmo updates pushed by their server are quite rare or simply don't work

Any procedure to make an update in wifi? (with no need to unplug the station from the power, move it to the computer and plug it in USB)?

Yes, sorry I explained myself poorly: you need to run the wizard for the update to take place. I just meant that you don't need to go to the page.

In other news, my replacement external module just arrived (old one got lost during a storm) and installed without issue, but to pair it one needs to use the module manager program one uses to install additional internal modules. Might be obvious, perhaps, but it was not mentioned anywhere that I have found. Just in case the info is useful.
