Thermostat makes a clicking sound

Post by hsl »

Hi,

My thermostat makes a clicking sound every few minutes, I can't really reproduce it, but I think it has something to do with the refreshing of the display.
I first had it as stand and now mounted it to the wall, in both conditions I hear the sound.

Is that normal?

Yeah sure, it's too big to attach to the post, so I've uploaded it to Vimeo:

Sound happens at 0:07 seconds and again at 0:28 seconds.

I'd say that's the normal "switching" sound.
Does it happen when you change settings below the current temperature?
Like right now ehre your room has 20° and you change from 18 to 14 for example.

Yep, and it literally happens every few minutes. Very annoying, especially if I want a thermostat in the bedroom.

So it happen even when no changes are applied.
Well, then this is not normal indeed.

Hi,
Thanks for sharing the video. This sound is perfectly normal, it is produced by the switching relay each time its state is changed (open or close).

That's very unfortunate, in the living room that's something I can live with, but in the bedrooms this is a no go.
Is there any way to get rid of the sound?

And wait,.. why do I hear the sound even when the relay is not switching?

Sound happens at 0:07 seconds and again at 0:28 seconds.
at 0:07 the target temp goes from 20 to 27 and the relay switches ON
at 0:28 the target temp goes from 27 to 20 and the relay switches OFF

this is normal behaviour IF you ordered the target temperature variation

i also suggest you to check the minimum time of heating defined in the thermostat parameters: give it at least 4-5 minutes to avoid frequent ON-OFF

But my thermostat is not the one switching the boiler, the relay is switching the boiler so it’s quite crazy that the built in relay in the thermostat is switching when the wires are not connected.
