Modulating thermostat does not modulate

Post by Rubik »

I recently bought a Netatmo Smart modulating thermostat. Their new modulating product, not the older non-modulating thermostat.
It has been connected to a compatible boiler (Atag A244EC) with opentherm capabilities.

The problem is that it does not modulate at all! It turns the boiler on at full blast for a very long time, so the temperature completely overshoots the setpoint. The radiators become very hot with 70 degrees C. My wired modulating thermostat will hardly ever reach 40 degrees C. My house is well isolated with a decent radiator capacity.
Of course this thermostat behavior results in a very uncomfortable climate.

Attached is a plot of Home Assistant (which I only use for monitoring the thermostat) showing the setpoint (blue), the current temp (red) and the state of the boiler (green).
I also contacted Netatmo support, but their reply will probably take a while.

Anything I can do in meanwhile?

Hi,
Could you please open this manual to page 37 (page 25 of the PDF) and tell us to which ports the control wires of the Thermostat were connected?
https://www.atagwarmte.nl/cv-ketel/wp-c ... A244EC.pdf
They have to be connected to ports 1 and 2, not 3 and 4.
Also, please share the serial number of your Thermostat to let us investigate.

Indeed the control wires were connected to ports 1&2 (not to 3&4).
My current wired modulating thermostate is also using 1&2.

Thank you for this information!
I can see that the Thermostat is uninstalled since last saturday, so I'm not able to access its data.
It might also explain why it does not work as expected.
Please install it again and let me know once done.

Correct, I had to uninstall it because of the overshoot behavior which was really uncomfortable.
I can re-install it temporarily to allow you to troubleshoot.

Would today 12:00-13:00 CET be okay? As I work from home I need to install my wired thermostat again afterwards (assuming there's no easy fix to get the Netatmo working).

Edit: please let me know what works for you. Unfortunately I can't keep the Netatmo connected all the time as it doesn't work properly.

Same problem here, Atag implemented only heating not hot water, for open therm. Netatmo regognizes This not. Honeywell regognizes this and you can modulate heating only with feedback of % heating.

That's an interesting theory.

I would expect a Netatmo thermostat to have no problem with a boiler not supporting hot water via Opentherm, as the thermostat only handles heating.
Do you have more information about this issue? Anything could be used to prove Netatmo this is something they need to fix?
