Presence microSD

Post by frav » 20 Jul 2018, 13:03

Hi,

I have some weeks ago bought two Netatmo Presence. I don’t know if it is a good or bad decision. We will see…

I took a look at the microSD card that is factory mounted in one of the cameras. It is a ADATA microSDHC UHS-I U1 Class 10 8GB memory card.

I think I would like to have a larger memory card size. Is SDHC 32GB maximum size? Or is it possible to have SDXC like 64GB or 128GB?

I have two 128GB Samsung Pro (R90/W80)) microSDXC UHS-I U3 Class 10 cards in my shelf. I'm tempted to use them for this purpose.

Otherwise, any specific recommendation of "aftermarket" memory cards? SanDisk, Samsung, Toshiba, or something, in their “professional” ranges due to better long levity?

I have 2x 85g of Super Lube grease, so I can fill the microSD card slots many times :)

Hi there,

I've had my Presence installed in northern Canada for just over a year and have had no issues with it at all. I decided to replace the microSD card about a week ago
with a 32GB SanDisk Extreme (90mb/s) and noticed that the originally supplied card had very little to no dielectric grease on it or the slot after a year of use. I greased up the new card and inserted it. Took about 30 minutes to begin recording, but was generating notifications in the meantime. Very happy with the speed and quality of recorded video! Also, as it looks like you are in Sweden, you will be happy to know that my camera worked perfectly even when we hit -40C last winter. The specs state it is good to -20C, but the reality with my camera was much better.

Hi, thank you for your reply.

I have now connected one of the cameras to power & before that I replaced the original 8GB ADATA microSDHC with a 128GB Samsung Pro microSDXC.

I can also say that there was very little dielectric grease in my camera. I have here in the forum read that there shall be enough grease to replace one microSD card. But when I removed my new inserted microSD card, there is not much grease on it. Maybe enough? Maybe not? I will add more grease.

I hope the cameras will withstand the Swedish south/west-coast climate. When I read that the microSD card slot get filled with water, it feels a bit strange when it is HZO certified. I have approx. 500m to the salty sea. So it is a very humid & salty environment here. Sometimes approx. +30deg C & sometimes approx. -20deg C. Of Course it can be warmer & colder that that, but it use to be in that intervall.

First of all, as a side note for configuration. The Presence is WiFi 2.4GHz only, so if you have an Access Point/Router & smartphone with dual-band WiFi 5.0GHz & 2.4GHZ, make sure that the smartphone is in 2.4GHz during configuration, otherwise the configuration will fail. The smartphone detects WiFi SSID & tries to configure, but fails, if it is on 5.0GHz. It would be nice if there was som kind of WiFi band check in the smartphone app. iOS error: "An unexpected error occurred. Try again.". Unfortunately I didn't wrote down the Android error message. Tried on both platforms.
---------

After the setup, that is fairly quick if you just are at the same WiFi band (2.4GHz), it works directly. The 128GB microSD seems to be detected as it should & when checking the microSD in a computer, there are two partitions. The first that are 488 MB & the second that are 118.76GB. So I suppose the first "500MB" are for operating system & the second partition are for saving videos. Having a large microSD probably makes the life longer for the memory card, because it dosn't have to overwrite the same sectors as often as it have to do on a smaller memory card.

I found out that the backside of the black configuration QR, that are for Reset and are supposed to be red, isn't there. So I suppose it has been some printing failure in production.
According to this I should find a way to generate the QR in the app, but cant find that.

Edit: Found a reset camera button in the smartphone app menu.

Now it is updating itself with new firmware. Where do I find what firmware version installed? Edit: I found it in the menu. f/w 92 right now.

Are there some known trouble with the automatic downloading of new firmware?

I have now two times had that one minute after power cable was connected, the message "Downloading update" shows up & 20min later it says "Download failed". So I'm still on f/w 92.

After 3-4 retries on each camera, the Presence cameras firmware finally got updated to v135.

Thanks for the useful info!

Can you confirm which partition videos are being saved to, on your microSD card?

I have no idea of where the videos are saved. But I suppose the long term storage is on the larger partition. And I suppose the smaller partition is for some kind of temporary file use, or something.
The camera OS must be stored on-board the circuitboard, because the camera boots up & is possible to communicate with even without the microSD inserted.

As I understand it, this Netatmo camera is using Andriod as OS.

I have forgot to write here. During the winter bought four more Presence cameras & in them there was Verbatim Premium 16GB SDHC UHS-I U1 V10 Class 10 [R80/W10] (44082) & Sandisk Industrial 8GB SDHC UHS-I U1 Class 10 [R20/W10] (SDSDQAF-008G), microSD cards from factory.

I'm now during summer going to "upgrade" all my six Presence with long lasting(?) Kingston High Edurance SDXC UHS-I U1 A1 Class 10 [R95/W30] (SDCE64GB)

I wonder if the camera will be able to work without an SD card if set to record to a FTP server ? I suppose not, since the camera would probably need some kind of temp storage before moving videos to the FTP, but it might have some internal memory

Hello Da9L,

The SD card is used a system buffer, it is therefore required by the camera. FTP is a backup storage.

@Frav, I would like to remind that our cameras are only fully compatible with SDHC (Max 32GB). SDXC (64GB +) might cause trouble over time and we do not recommend to use them.

I thank you for your comprehension.
